I had never heard of it before. Removing body parts as a preventive measure. I knew my ovaries would have to go, but not my breasts. I was completely shocked.

 

Kerstin carries a mutation in the BRCA gene, which greatly increases the risk of breast and ovarian cancer, with an estimated 50–80 percent lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. After receiving the diagnosis, she chose preventive medical measures. In November 2024, she had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed, and in January 2026, she underwent a double mastectomy. She chose not to have reconstructive surgery, allowing her chest to heal flat.
